What is self-esteem?
"The collection of belief's or feelings we have about ourselves and our self-perceptions".

It is important as a parent for you to instill a "can do" attitude in your children's self-esteem. During the divorce your children's outlook on their future and life is changing and they are experiencing the unknown which can be scary. They feel as if they have no control over what is happening in their family. Their parents are not trying, causing anxiety, frustration and the attitude of.

"Why should I try, my parents are not trying, they are just giving up."

You as the parent play an important role in building and promoting healthy self-esteem in your children. Even though your own self-worth and self-esteem may not be healthy, you need to set an example for your children by demonstrating your own desire keep trying and moving ahead in a positive manner.

Here are a few tips to use in building and keeping your children's self-esteem healthy:

Speak With Care
Your children are sensitive to what you say as their parents so watch what you say and how you speak. Praise them for a job well done but also for the effort. Be truthful not hurtful and reward efforts not just the outcome!
